Pine Siskin

The Pine Siskin is a delightful songbird.

Latin name: Carduelis pinus

Length, wingspan: 5″, 9″

What they eat: Seeds, insects, suet

Habitat: Woodlands, coniferous forests, open areas

Plants that attract: Conifers (for their cone seeds)

Where they nest: Trees

My observations: Pine Siskins are a type of finch that we really enjoy seeing at our bird feeders during the winter months. They love sunflower and Nyjer thistle seeds. These sweet little birds are mostly identifiable by the vertical striping on their breasts and light-gold wing feathers. Pine Siskins are pretty sociable, preferring to hang out in small flocks, as you can see by this feeder photo! You’ve probably noticed they are just as happy to eat upside-down, too.
