This week’s video is about a subject near and dear to my heart: seed starting. Why? It’s so important to know how to grow your own plants (esp. veggies) from seed. If you’ve been looking at the price of groceries lately (esp. produce), that should provide all the motivation you need!

In previous years, I’ve been shooting a series of videos on seed starting but did something different this year. I felt that a tutorial covering the entire process (seed to garden) would be a great idea. And I’m getting a lot of wonderful comments from viewers, indicating that’s just what they were looking for!

Here’s what you’ll learn about seed starting in the video:

  • Why you need to know how to grow plants from seed.
  • The basic seed starting supplies you’ll need.
  • The great information you’ll find on the back of seed packets.
  • When to plant your seeds. This especially applies to cool-season and warm-season vegetable crops.
  • Seed viability (how long the seeds will have good germination rates).
  • The steps for planting the seeds.
  • What happens when your seeds germinate (sprout)?
  • The importance of up-potting (moving seedlings to larger containers).
  • Hardening-off (acclimating your baby plants to the intensity of the sun).
  • Transplanting them into the garden. That’s always an exciting time, right?

As you can see by the above, that is a LOT of information. But everything is so important and key to your success. And I got it all done in 12 minutes! Whew. Here’s the video:
