Video: Winter Houseplant Tips

I’m really excited about this week’s video. Why? It’s packed with winter houseplant tips. It’s too cold to garden outdoors (at least, here in Spokane, Wash.) so we can focus on the indoor plants.

That said, there are certain things that you should and shouldn’t do to your houseplants right now. That’s why I shot this video. The take-home message is that this is their rest period. They don’t need fertilizer and it’s not a great time to propagate them. You shouldn’t repot them at this time either.

However, there are plenty of nice things you can do for them so they’ll get through the winter OK.

Start by walking through your home and taking note of 3 important things:

  • Light
  • Drafts
  • Temperature extremes

With the days being shorter this time of year, make sure your houseplants are getting enough light. As I mention in the video, the sun is lower in the sky, too. Both of these factors can impact the amount of light they get. Move the pots where they’ll get more.

If the plants are near windows and doors, make sure they’re not being exposed to drafts. You’ll want to relocate them away from those. (think about it: you wouldn’t want to sit in a cold and drafty area either!)

Do you have a woodstove, fireplace or radiators? If your houseplants are near any of those, a move is in order. They really do not like those temperature extremes, going from chilly to hot in short order.

Here’s my video:

Did you enjoy the video? Isn’t it great that we can do some indoor gardening right now? I hope you found these winter houseplant tips helpful.

Three last things.

  • First of all, are you wondering what the beautiful plant on the video cover is? That’s Alocasia micholtziana ‘Green Velvet’. I think it’s aptly named, don’t you?
  • The photo at the very top of this post shows colorful African violets. And the photo at the upper left is of a red Caladium.
  • Second, if you haven’t done so yet, please subscribe to my YouTube channel. I shoot a new video every week and you can easily search my channel for great gardening topics. I also have an index to my videos on my website. You can specifically my 2024 video topics (there are links to them). Or you’ll notice that index also categorizes my videos by the topic.
