Video: Plant a Fall Garden

I recently surveyed my Facebook followers about gardening topics of interest to them. It turns out that a lot of folks want to know how to plant a fall garden. That’s an excellent topic!

In this video, I explain why growing vegetables in the fall is such a great idea. Here in Spokane, Wash., we’ve had such a challenging growing season. As a result, many crops aren’t doing very well. I want to resolve that by growing a fall garden.

The photo to the left shows a previous fall/winter garden. Those are lettuce plants and I grew them in our little unheated hoop house. But it’s also easy it is to protect plants with floating row cover.

What you’ll learn in this video:

  • The time frame for planting crops.
  • Crop and variety recommendations.
  • Soil preparation so your plants will grow well.
  • How to protect crops from frosts and insects. The great news, however, is that there should be fewer insects around!

I have two raised beds that are ready for their fall crops. In one, I’ll grow sugar snap peas, pak choi, lettuce and spinach. I might even add some arugula if I have room! I’ll plant root crops in the second bed: carrots, beets, turnips and radishes.
