This is one of last year’s deck pots.

Who loves to plant containers? If you’re like me, you enjoy adding flowers to your outdoor spaces wherever possible! In this week’s video, I explain how to plant containers because they add so much to our landscapes.

You can plant all sorts of pots with flowers, veggies, herbs, or perennials (if your weather permits). Since we have a large vegetable garden, I prefer to grow annual flowers in containers. Those are flowers that grow, bloom, set seed, and die in a single growing season.

Some of my favorites include geraniums, calibrachoa, lantanas, and anything else that attracts hummingbirds! I always wait until the danger of frost has passed before I plant containers with annuals.

This year’s container plants:

Deck pots: Canna lily ‘Cannova Rose’, Lantana ‘Luscious Basket Tangeglow’ and Portulaca ‘Campino Twist Red’.

Picket planters: Zonal geraniums (Pelargoniums) ‘Sunrise Orange’.

Hanging baskets: Lotus vine ‘Amazon Sunset’, Cuphea ‘Vermillionaire’, Sweetunia ‘Fiona Flash’, and Calibrachoa ‘Minifamous Neo Double Orangetastic’.

Front porch pot: Begonia Viking ‘Explorer Rose on Green’, Coleus ‘Sun Coral Candy’, and Coleus ‘Main Street River Walk’.

This year, I’m excited to try out our new hanging baskets from Kinsman Garden Company. As I mentioned in the video, our old baskets were definitely ready to be replaced. The new baskets are 14″ in diameter. This is my first time using coco fiber liners but I haven’t had any problems with them.

Whenever you plant containers, remember to monitor their soil moisture because you don’t want them to dry out. Conversely, you don’t want to overwater them either. Here’s my video:

Are you ready to plant your containers? In the video, I mentioned Bill’s ingenious way of watering our containers automatically. In 2022, I shot a video with the specific details on how to do this. Here it is:

Did you know that I have a video index on this website? Here’s a link to it. You’ll notice that I have a separate table for my 2024 videos. The rest is a chronological list of my videos.
