Video: Let’s Grow Tomatoes!

This week’s video is a bit of a milestone for me: a single video on how to grow tomatoes. I’ve created over 600 videos for my YouTube channel over the past 10 years. But I’ve never shot a video that covers everything about a crop during the course of a growing season. Best of all, I squeezed it all into 20 minutes!

I’ve got a reasonable excuse for this, though. It’s pretty hard to have enough photos and videos at my disposal to cover all the important topics. But in this video, I share tips on starting tomato plants from seed and preparing them for their outdoor lives. Not only that, I also explain what the terms determinate, indeterminate and dwarf mean. (you probably have been wondering that, right?)

My goal for this video was to help you be successful at growing your own tomato crop. Don’t forget that I also have the How to Grow Tomatoes page on this site. It has lots of additional information for you.

Here’s what you’ll find my Grow Tomatoes video: (including a timeline)

  • 02:29 Tomato types
  • 03:39 Grafted tomatoes
  • 04:13 When to start tomatoes from seed
  • 05:25 How to start tomato plants from seed
  • 10:10 Amazing tip!!!

By the way, you definitely won’t want to miss the amazing tip at 10 minutes into the video! I don’t think very many folks know about it but it’s a game-changer. To keep the video short and sweet, there were two topics that I couldn’t dive deeply into. Those are potential insects and plant diseases. I mentioned 3 of the most commonly-encountered insects and a few plant disorders; that’s all I had time for. I do have a detailed video on blossom-end rot so you’ll definitely want to watch it.
