Video: Winter Sowing 2025
If you’re new to the concept of winter sowing, have I got a treat for you! That is the subject of this week’s video. Winter sowing involves planting seeds in containers and leaving them outside during the winter months. The seeds germinate when the time is right.
That whole concept seems crazy, doesn’t it? I mean, how could it even remotely work, especially in regions with harsh winters? That’s what I originally thought the very first time I tried it in 2020. After all, it went against everything I had learned about starting plants from seeds.
You can imagine how amazed I was by the results. The seeds did indeed germinate at the correct time. They flourished in their temporary containers and hit the ground running when I transplanted them into the garden.
Winter sowing has since become an annual tradition for me. And shooting a video about it every year is also a tradition because I want gardeners to be aware of this unusual method. Over the years, I’ve grown a wide variety of veggies and flowers.
One of my favorite things about winter sowing is that it frees up space underneath our grow lights. Since Bill and I are both avid gardeners, you can imagine that space is at a premium. Bill primarily focuses on starting onions, shallots, peppers and certain tomato varieties. My focus is on paste tomatoes, broccoli, lettuce, beans, peas, melons, squash and flowers. As a result, we need a LOT of grow light space.
