Video: Onions, Shallots & Garlic: You Grew It, What To Do With It!
It’s time for the 4th in my series of videos called “You Grew It, What To Do With It!” What’s the focus of this week’s video? Onions, shallots and garlic. Those are 3 staples in the kitchen, right?
In it, I share a growing tip and an interesting fact about onions that revolves around day-length. I show how we store these 3 crops and then make 2 recipes that you’ll definitely want to try! What with Thanksgiving being this week, I’ve released my video a day early. (just in case you want to make one or both of those recipes)
My three previous videos covered beets, carrots, and winter squash and pumpkins. Each of those links will take you to the video.
Recipes included in the video:
There are so many types of veggies I enjoy. But I would have to say that onions, shallots and garlic are the 3 workhorses in our savory dishes. They add so much flavor! In this video, I demonstrate how to make pickled onions and how to make green bean salad, which includes the onions. I think you’ll agree that both are delicious.
The great news is that both of the recipes are quick to make. That means you can include one or both in your Thanksgiving feast. Score!
If you’re wondering which varieties we grew of each, here you go. Onions: ‘Ailsa Craig’, ‘Red of Florence’, ‘Akatama’. Shallots: ‘Zebrune’. Garlic: ‘German Porcelain’.
Did you know that I’ve shot 21 videos over the years about cooking and preserving your harvests? Here is a link to that playlist on my YouTube channel. And don’t forget that I have a Preserving the Harvest section on my website.
I hope you’ve been enjoying these “You Grew It” videos. Do you have a request for a crop I should focus on? Just drop me a note at Susan@SusansintheGarden.com.
