Video: July Vegetable Garden Tour
Since we’re in the month of July, it’s time for my July Vegetable Garden Tour video. In it, I provide an update on how all of the crops are coming along.
As I’ve mentioned in the past few videos, our early season weather has really set back a lot of crops. It’s so frustrating! It has affected the shelling peas, corn, tomatoes, onions and squash. But good things are happening in the garden, too. The ‘Belstar’ broccoli is fantastic!
I’ve already harvested 7 huge heads and will pick the last one in a couple of days. We saved one for meals this week. Then I blanched and froze the rest so we’ll have some tasty eating during the off season. The broccoli plants will start developing secondary heads (side shoots), which we’ll harvest for the rest of the season.
A heat wave will hit the Spokane area starting this weekend. I’m seeing temperatures between 95 degrees F. and 105. Ugh. We intend to cover a few crops with shade cloth and increase the watering times. I wonder how the plants will respond to another temperature extreme?
The cool-season crops won’t like those temperatures. I harvested a lot of the lettuce and kale yesterday, knowing both crops will bolt to seed in the heat. Fingers crossed for the rest of the garden!
I hope you’ll enjoy my July vegetable garden tour. Stay cool! If you’d like to watch previous vegetable garden tours or any of my other videos, here’s a link to my YouTube channel.
