Growing a flower garden is such a delight. I think it’s safe to say we all love flowers. But there are some tips and tricks to keeping them productive.

That’s the topic for this week’s video. In it, I discuss the importance of deadheading spent flowers and matching your conditions to the plants’ needs. You’ll also get a reminder to watch out for garden thugs. You know the ones: plants that try to take over your corner of the world, right?

I also bring up the all-important topic of weeding. I don’t think any gardener enjoys that activity but it’s definitely worth your time.

My favorite spring flower garden plants

  • Herbaceous Peonies: you’ll even get to see my newest one in the video. Peony blooms are just gorgeous!
  • Columbines: Some very special ones in my flower beds include ‘Nora Barlow’, Aquilegia canadensis (native columbine), ‘Pink Lanterns’, ‘Winky Pink’ and ‘Clementine’.
  • Painted Daisies
  • Bearded Iris
  • Lupines: although you have to keep on eye on them since they like to self-sow.

I will shoot more videos of the flowers in our landscape as the season progresses. But in the meantime, you might be interested in my 2023 garden column about Awesome Annual Flowers.
