Video: How to Make Homegrown Pumpkin Pie

In honor of Thanksgiving, I thought I’d share a video I’ve made on how to make pumpkin pie from scratch. And best of all, from your own homegrown pumpkins.

In this video, you’ll learn how to roast a pumpkin and make a pie crust. Then you’ll assemble the filling ingredients and bake it. I also share my thoughts on great uses for winter squash that you’ve grown as well.

I always grow pumpkins every for this very purpose. My favorite varieties include ‘New England Pie’ pumpkin and ‘Spookie’. High Mowing Organic Seeds is a great source for the first variety. And Renee’s Garden carries Spookie seeds.

Do you know my tip about harvesting and curing pumpkins and winter squash? To determine if they are ripe, do the thumbnail test. This involves pressing your fingernail into the flesh. If it pierces the skin easily, it’s not ripe. Let it grow a bit longer. But if it doesn’t cut into the skin, it’s ready. Cure the pumpkins (or winter squash) in a warm, bright area for 2 weeks. Then move them into storage. This process will help them keep for a long time.

I think you’ll agree that a homemade pie is the best! Enjoy the video and Happy Thanksgiving!
