Video: Prune Raspberries and Blackberries
I get a lot of questions about how to prune raspberries so that’s the topic of this week’s video. And I included blackberries as well, since their pruning method is very similar.
You will learn some very interesting things about the two main types of raspberries, which are summer-bearing and fall-bearing. Once you know which type you’re growing, you will understand exactly how and when to prune them.
If you’ve moved into a new place and you don’t know which types of berry vines are in your garden, that’s tricky. My best advice to you is to just observe their growth and bearing habits the first year.
Note: I have gotten a LOT of nice comments about this video. To be honest, I think this is the best one I’ve shot about pruning these berries to date. Sometimes it can seem daunting, knowing which canes (upright branches) you should cut back.
I also want to mention that I’m trying the new method that I learned about while creating this video. It involved cutting back ALL of the ‘Fall Gold’ raspberry canes last fall. Apparently, I should get a larger harvest by doing this. We shall see!
