We all love cooking with garlic, right? Well, did you know it’s easy to plant garlic and end up with a fabulous harvest? Find out how in this week’s video.

I’ll start by showing you how to prepare your planting bed and plant the cloves. Then you’ll learn the differences between soft-neck and hard-neck garlic. I’ll also cover the best time of year to plant them. Spoiler alert: plant garlic in the fall so you get the largest bulbs possible. I even explain what happens between the fall and harvest-time in the summer.

If you’re looking at the photo on the left, Bill took it to show me harvesting garlic scapes. Those occur on hardneck garlic plants. The short explanation is that those plants want to bloom. But if you let them, it will be at the expense of the garlic bulb developing down in the soil. So you’ll want to remove those flower buds once they are in the shape of a curlicue.

I hope you’ll enjoy this video and get your garlic in before the ground freezes! It is such a treat to savor this flavorful crop from summer through the winter months. You’ll be hooked before you know it.
