Video: Harvest Tomatoes

harvest tomatoes
This is a ‘Gilbertie’ paste tomato.

In this week’s video, I get to harvest tomatoes from my garden. And that’s what this time of year is all about, right? We’re all harvesting the bounty from the plants we so lovingly have tended throughout the spring and summer.

But before I started to harvest tomatoes for this video, I wanted to cover something really important. What’s that, you ask? I explain the difference between determinate and indeterminate types and the benefits of each. You’ve probably heard those two terms for years and it can be a confusing topic.

It all depends upon what you’re harvesting goals are. For example, if you want a lot of ripe tomatoes at the same time, go with determinates. If you want to harvest throughout the season, choose an indeterminate variety. I hope my explanation will clear up the mystery!

I’m growing 3 varieties of paste tomatoes, which are ideal for making tomato sauce, salsa and ketchup: ‘Federle‘, ‘Gilbertie‘ and ‘Supremo‘. The first two are indeterminates and the third is a determinate. I’ve included links to my seed sources for each of those varieties.

I hope you’ll find this video helpful and that you’ve been getting a great harvest!
