Video: Vegetable Harvesting Tips
It is such a treat to be picking fresh veggies on a regular basis now! I have been keeping a close eye on our heads of broccoli to make sure harvested it at the right time. And that got me to thinking, “I wonder if new gardeners would benefit from some vegetable harvesting tips?”
That led to this week’s video. In it, I cover broccoli, potatoes, onions, Swiss chard and kale. Even if you’re not a new gardener, I believe there’s a lot of useful information in it. Or perhaps you’re growing one of these crops for the first time.
In the case of broccoli, pick the heads when they are uniformly green and firm. You don’t want to wait until the head gets soft and starts to bloom, because it won’t be at its best. The exciting thing about broccoli is that you’ll get more harvests after picking the primary heads. Pretty soon, you’ll start seeing secondary heads (side shoots) forming in between the stem and branches.
Harvest main crops of potatoes in the fall, once the foliage has been frosted and turns brown. The nice thing about onions is that the stalks fall over when they’ve finished growing. Pick Swiss chard and kale throughout the season.
In either case, I hope you will enjoy learning about vegetable harvesting!
