Video: Harvest Garlic Scapes

Garlic Scapes

If you’re growing garlic, you will definitely want to check out my latest video. In it, I explain what garlic scapes are and why it’s so important to cut them off your plants. I feel like the growing season is zipping right along. That’s because I can’t believe it’s time to even talk about scapes already!

I should add that this information only applies to hardneck varieties. They are the only ones that form scapes. But you will learn what to do with them after you’ve harvested your garlic scapes. And I clarify when it will be time to dig up your garlic bulbs.

So what are scapes anyway? Those are the flower stalks that start growing in midsummer. The problem is that if you let the plants bloom, it takes away energy from the developing bulbs. You don’t want that to happen, right? In the video, I tell you what to do about it.

Succession planting is the other topic I touch on in this video. This has to do with planning ahead so you can plant as much as possible in your vegetable garden. Since our shelling peas are just about finished for the season, we are getting ready to replace the plants when the time is right.

I hope you’ll enjoy this video!
