Video: Crop Rotation Explained

crop rotation
Springtime in the Mulvihill garden!

Have you heard of crop rotation? Do you think it only refers to farmers? Well, it can apply to vegetable gardeners, too. Why? It will help prevent or reduce disease and insect problems. That’s why I covered this topic in my newest video.

This method refers to mindful decisions about where you’re going to grow certain crops each year. Let’s say you grow the same crop in the same spot year after year and if it has disease issues. That will it perpetuate the problem.

In the video, I mention the importance of knowing your vegetable plant families. That’s because members of a single plant family can all be susceptible to the same disease. I have a Vegetable Plant Families chart on this website. Here’s a direct link to it. That will save you some time!

As you’ll see, I create a layout of our vegetable garden every year. And, more importantly, I save them! When I’m ready to think about where to put each crop, I get out the last few years’ copies. I usually start with deciding where the tomatoes will grow since they are susceptible to some potential issues.

In my newest book, The Vegetable Garden Problem Solver Handbook*, I explain why crop rotation is so helpful.

I hope you’ll enjoy this video and come away with a better understanding of crop rotation principles. And you’ll discover it applies to small gardens, too.

Next week’s video topic will be seed-starting. I’ll explain the concepts and keep everything simple!
