Video: Sweet Potato Harvest in Zone 5b
It’s time for my next video and this one is particularly special. Why? My awesome, helpful and creative husband, Bill, joined me for it! That’s because he was the one who thought of trying to grow sweet potatoes here in Spokane, Wash. Our 2022 sweet potato harvest is the topic for this video.
This was actually our second year of growing sweet potatoes. Bill bought two organic sweet potatoes at our local grocery store. He put one of them into a jar of water and the other resting in a small soil-filled container.
As you’ll learn in the video, Bill grew them in one of the beds inside our little hoop house. He also grew some in a small raised bed in the main part of the garden. Last year’s harvest was larger than this year’s. We’re still pleased with how they performed, especially since Bill only planted them in containers.
Find out how it went. I should also add that the cover photo for this video is actually a photo from last year. That’s so you can see what the “slips” look like.
It’s always fun to grow crops that are perhaps atypical for a region, right? We haven’t had a roaring success but it’s been an enjoyable experiment. And we gardeners just love to push the envelope!
