Video: How to Plant Potatoes
When I wrote my Apr. 11 garden column about how to grow potatoes, it was too early to plant potatoes.
That makes it challenging for me to “pair” a column and a video on the same topic. My goal is to write columns early enough that it will help you prepare for certain events in your garden.
Fortunately, I was able to plant potatoes a few days ago and I shot a video to illustrate the points. It’s pretty easy to plant them, once you know the basics. And you’ve got options! You can grow them using the trench method or plant them in a bed without the trench. You can also grow them in containers. It’s all a matter of what works best for your situation.
It’s best to start with seed potatoes from a reliable source. We like to buy ours from High Mowing Organic Seeds. However, if you have some leftover potatoes from the previous fall, that’s works, too. It’s common practice to buy large seed potatoes and cut them into individual chunks for planting. I prefer using smaller potatoes so I don’t have to cut them, which reduces the chance of them rotting.
