Video: The Importance of Crop Rotation

Have you heard the term “crop rotation” before? Chances are, you’ve discounted the notion of it because you’re not a farmer. Well, crop rotation applies to humble vegetable gardeners like you and me because it is an easy way to ensure the health and productivity of our gardens.

If that caught your attention, you’ll be happy to hear that I’ve just created a video on the importance of crop rotation (see below). In it, I explain why it’s so important, I show which crops belong to the different vegetable plant families, and demonstrate exactly how I rotate my crops each year.

I have occasionally heard some folks say there isn’t enough evidence to support following this practice. Well, the more I research the life cycles of various insects that can cause damage to a vegetable garden, and the more I hear about disease pathogens remaining in the soil of certain beds, the more I am willing to embrace this method for decreasing the instances of insect and disease problems.

I have been practicing crop rotation methods for many years now and I have a healthy, productive garden every single year. That tells me I’m on the right track!
