Sept. 2 Column: Friends of Manito Fall Plant Sale
One of this region’s most highly-anticipated events will take place next Saturday: the Friends of Manito fall plant sale. Here is a link to my column: Find hummingbirds’ favorite perennials at Friends of Manito Plant Sale.
For those of you who don’t live in the Inland Northwest, I’m sorry that I’m teasing you by writing about a local event. However, there is still useful information to be gleaned from my column because in it, I write about some of the best perennials you can add to your garden in order to attract hummingbirds. And we all love hummingbirds, right?
So I hope you find it helpful and that it gives you ideas of plants that will really draw them in. If you’re wondering what that orange-red flower is in the photo at the very top of this post, that is Zauschneria garrettii ‘Orange Carpet’. It’s truly a hummingbird magnet! And to the right is an Agastache, which I mention in my column.
You might also be wondering what type of hummingbird that is in the photo above. It’s a male rufous hummingbird and isn’t he a beauty?
The great thing about this plant sale is that the proceeds raised will go right back into Spokane’s beloved Manito Park, so it’s a great way to give back to your community. The Friends of Manito is a volunteer organization, and all of the plants sold have been lovingly tended by those volunteers for months. So I do hope you can attend. It will be held on Sept. 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Manito Park, just east of the Gaiser Conservatory.
And, before I forget, it’s time for this week’s “Everyone Can Grow a Garden” video. Since it’s now September, I wanted to take you through my vegetable garden so you can see what has changed since the August tour. I hope you’ve been enjoying seeing how our garden changes throughout the course of a growing season. If you want to see something both cool and funny, don’t miss the end of my video, by the way!
