Winter Garden Video Update – Hoop house Dec. 2017
I did a recent post showing how my winter garden is doing. I thought a video would be even more helpful. I’m a very visual learner and perhaps you are, too! This little garden is located inside our hoop house.
So let’s jump right into the video, then I’ll give you some additional background:
During the video, I mentioned a book I had read. I wanted to give you that information here: The Winter Harvest Handbook by Eliot Coleman. It is excellent. His other book, Four-Season Harvest is also wonderful.
Our hoop house is 10 feet wide, 8 feet long, and fits over 2 raised beds. My husband designed it and figured out all the supplies we would need to make it. Here’s a link to my blog post about constructing it. The post also includes the video we shot during the process and a supply list: Hoop house project.
Here’s s a link to the types of cold-tolerant vegetables we grow inside the hoop house: Winter garden update #1.
As I mentioned in the video, you don’t have to build a hoop house to grow a winter garden. I started out very simply 4 years ago: Fall garden update.
There’s one thing I would add to all of the above information. If you go the simple route, it’s important to have sturdy hoops. You don’t want them to collapse under the weight of snow. You can either tie them together with twine, or you can slip your hoops over re-bar posts. There is a photo of what I’m talking about in my post about the column I wrote on season extension.
As always, if you have any questions about our hoop house, just let me know! My email address is Susan@susansinthegarden.com.
