Apr. 30 column: Swiss chard and spinach
It’s hard to believe we’re at the end of March already, but that just means we’re getting closer to more pleasant weather and getting to be out in the garden on a regular basis. Hooray for that!
Here is a link to my column in today’s edition of The Spokesman-Review: Get early start with spinach, chard. The topic is on growing two cool-season crops, Swiss chard and spinach. Both are pretty easy to grow, although they can get an annoying insect called the leaf miner.
Fortunately, there’s a simple solution to this problem which you’ll find in my column! You’ll also learn why chard is called Swiss chard… great trivia to know for when you’re a contestant on “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” ;o)
If you’re wondering what that plant is in the above photo, it is ‘Silverado’ Swiss chard. Isn’t it a beauty?
